  Profile

I am currently a PhD student in the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (SEAT) at Massey University, New Zealand. My supervisors are Stephen Marsland and Hans Guesgen.

I obtained a BSc. (Hons) in Computing from Staffordshire University, UK. Upon graduation, I worked as a programmer in a multinational company where my work relates to design and implementation of systems that deal with fingerprint identification, smart card and pin pad security code. I further my M.Sc degree at Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST), which I completed in 2005. I joined Multimedia University (MMU) as a lecturer before pursuing my PhD in 2008.

  PhD Research

Behaviour recognition aims at inferring the particular behaviours of the inhabitant in a smart home from a series of sensor readings from around the house. There are many reasons to recognise human behaviours; one being to monitor the elderly or cognitively impaired people. We view the behaviour recognition problem as a task of mapping the sensory outputs to a sequence of recognised inhabitant's activities. My research focuses on the development of machine learning methods to find an approximation to the mapping between sensor outputs and behaviours. Learning the mapping raises an important issue, which is that the training data is either annotated with exemplar behaviours of the inhabitants or without any annotations. My doctoral study addresses the problem of finding an approximation to this mapping by proposing two directions: one using supervised learning on annotated sensory stream and unsupervised learning on unannotated ones.
